ART

The Art Unit is a part of the St. Andrew's Secondary Craft and Technology Department. Visual Arts is taught to all Lower Secondary students. Art is also offered as an elective subject to Upper Secondary students.

The curriculum aims to cultivate an appreciation of art and design through meaningful art education whereby every child will become visually literate.

A visually literate child will be able to observe, understand and make meaning of the world they are in. They will also be able to communicate their ideas by using and creating visuals.

A child who appreciates art will be able to recognise the relevance of art and find art valuable in their lives.

Art Unit, St Andrew’s Junior College

The close working relationship between the Art teachers in the secondary and the junior college started ever since the schools worked on the St. Andrew’s Village Opening Ceremony. The 2 departments decided to embark on a learning journey to Italy together in 2007, whereby the junior college seniors guided the younger ones. It proved to be an experience that they will never forget.

Both continue to support each other in resource sharing, workshops and programs exchange.

The Secondary school appreciates the tremendous learning opportunities that the Junior College has been offering the students and teachers.

Egg Story Digital Arts Academy

The ESDAA supports the Art unit in their foray into Computer Generated (CG) Animation. The collaboration also propels the Art unit to explore the teaching of 3D modelling (using Cinema 4D) to the lower secondary.

HOME ECONOMICS

The HE Department is a section of St. Andrew's Secondary Craft and Technology. It aims to enrich students’ experience in equipping themselves with the basic skills for independent living through the principles of nutrition, food management, textiles cum clothing design and consumer education.

PROGRAMMES

In 2009, we have the following in our Instructional Programme:
Apron Design Lessons
The apron printing lesson is one of the first few lessons that are always carried out for secondary one student. During these lessons the students are introduced to the Green street software programme which allows students to design their own name. This lesson also introduces basic IT and design skills and help to promote a sense of belonging.

Cooking Assessment
Practical cooking assessments are conducted during lessons for all lower secondary students. This is a good channel of assessment where students are assessed on their cooking skills. This is a student centered lesson as students learn from their own mistakes. They also learn about the importance of good hygiene in the kitchen, simple housekeeping procedures and also time management skills.

Course Work Modules (Sec 1 express classes)
Course work is a higher-order thinking project work that is carried out for all sec one classes.
In this challenging project work, students are given a case study about a person with a health condition, eg: Diabetic, Hypertension, Heart disease or Obesity and are expected to create a healthy meal for this person.
Students will need to go through weeks of research, planning and decision making before proceeding to buy the necessary ingredients that they have planned to cook for their case study. The cooking is assessed during their Homec practical lesson.

Many Ways of Seeing (MWOS) project work (Sec 1)
The MWOS project is a very interesting teaching method whereby students are engaged with given topics and are tasked to investigate it through photography. These visual researches are subsequently edited and presented using Microsoft Movie Maker. The final presentation is then assessed in class based on their relevance to the topic and presentation creativity.
The project not only aims to help students acquire IT skills but also, team work etiquette.

‘Recycling’ Projects (Sec 2)
The ‘Recycling’ project aims to encourage students to utilize ready/ used materials in innovative ways. Students are tasked to use discarded materials and make them into aesthetically pleasing flower holders.

‘Teach less Learn More’ Projects
The TLLM project aims to help students to take charge of their own learning. This project helps prepare students to be able to look for relevant information on the internet and make them to be ale to create their own PowerPoint slides to help them learn. This is a very interesting project that allows a wide range of creativity amongst students. Students learning with this model of teaching also have feedback that they have learnt far more than what the text book has to offer. This opens up the horizon of our students thus better preparing them with the right skills for tertiary education. Since this is a group project it also allows students to interact better with their classmates and teaches them social skills.

Integrated Project Work (IPW) with the English dept (Sec1A RKS Adams Class)
The IPW project work is an integrated project work, where students practice higher order thinking skills. Through this project work the students will be able to understand how they can actually link various subjects together to come up with one sophisticated end-product.
This project involves a series of thinking skills like planning, decision making, research skills, time management skills and also evaluation skills. By doing this project work we aim to haves students to practice independent learning and also make them IT savvy.

Tablet PCs (Sec1A RKS Adams Class)
The introduction of tablet PC for the class allows for fun, interactive explorations in the students’ projects. Since the tablet PC has a lot of programmes installed in it, students are encouraged to tap on the various programs such as “fun with construction”, to self- create study notes or presentation charts in colorful ways that makes learning more fun and personalized.
